COSMOS

Exploration between the void and the infinite.

Philosophy

The cosmos can not be explained in words. The rules remain to be contained in full by a set of equations. The beauty cannot be summarized in emotions. We find ourselves surrounded by endless complexity, regardless of whether we zoom in or we zoom out.

Atelier Cosmos originates from a desire to build a deeper understanding and channeling this sense of wonder into creations of aesthetic appeal. These are the mere by-products of a playground where science, meaning, design and creativity co-exist. The mission is to grasp bits of the invisible and gently illuminate the beauty of natural sciences to a broader audience.

Realized projects

An overview of the portfolio of realized projects.

Widmannstätten patterned meteorite gyroscope

A meteorite with Widmanstätten structure is magnetically captured in gyroscopic wooden rings that are coated with deep black paint.

The design highlights the Widmanstätten crystal structure, an octahedritepattern of nickel-iron. The sense of awe is drawn from the fact that these crystal structures can only arise due to the extremely slow cooling of the meteorites in the vacuum of space (1 degree K per million years). The iron-nickel is magnetized and is attrached to the magnets on top of the ring.

The gyroscopic frame is assembled of full wooden rings that are connected with non-magnetic, ceramic bearings and carbon fiber rods. The inside of the frames are covered with world's deepest black paint to offer a contrast with the reflections of the meteorite.

Proton-antiproton annihilation laser etched on anodized aluminium

This artwork is an image of antiproton - proton annihilation that was photographed in a cloud chamber and is now laser engraved on a beautiful black anodized aluminium plate.

The sheer beauty of the signatures made by the fundamental particles as they collide and degrade travel through the chamber at light speed, easily distracts from the mystery at hand. It took decades and the brightest minds to figure out the fundamental laws behind this process of annihilation between matter and anti-matter. Yet these conditions were present shortly after the big bang and it is still a mystery to physicists why not all matter and antimatter annihilated but instead due to some asymmetry left our universe today - empty and flooded with photons.

Tesseract audio speaker

The tesseract audio speaker is a reference to a projection of a 4D hypercube in a three dimensional space. Higher dimensions are not solely a mathematical curiosity, they also find their basis in many physics theories on deeper layers of reality.

The speaker is based on a high fidelity Mark-audio full range speaker and gives excellent acoustic performance. The housing is acoustically dampened with bitumen and vibrations absorbing material. The driver is a Bluetooth board that is connected easily to any multimedia device.

The frame is made from square copper rods and the connector pieces are 3D printed from high end nylon material for high stiffness. The wood has been milled to high precision and is covered with walnut veneer that contrasts beautifully with the copper.

Completed in 2024.

Future projects

My sketchbooks are bulging with unrealized ideas, some artworks being fit for private use and others more suitable for public places.
